Pedestrian Accidents in New York
Walking is a common way to get around New York. Unfortunately, it is never completely safe to cross the street next to a moving vehicle. The New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) reports that there were 7,354 pedestrian-vehicle collisions that resulted in serious injuries and fatalities in a recent year, with 739 pedestrian deaths and 6,615 crashes contributing to 6,784 serious injuries. Still, a pedestrian’s odds of dying in a collision are ten times higher than a driver’s.
Since they are not protected, pedestrians are definitely more likely to sustain severe or even fatal injuries in the event of an accident.
