Buffalo, NY – Motorcycle Crash, One Dead on Zoar Valley Rd

Buffalo, NY (August 26, 2024) – A tragic motorcycle crash in Buffalo claimed the life of an Amherst man on Saturday afternoon, August 24, as reported by the New York State Police. The accident occurred around 12:24 p.m. on Zoar Valley Road, near Otto Road, when the motorcyclist lost control of his vehicle.

The victim, identified as 68-year-old Mark Burkholder, was traveling eastbound on Zoar Valley Road when he encountered a patch of gravel that caused him to lose control of his motorcycle. The bike veered off the road, striking a ditch on the north side of the roadway, which led to Burkholder being thrown from the motorcycle.

Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene, with New York State Police troopers administering lifesaving measures while awaiting the arrival of Gowanda EMS. Despite the efforts to save him, Burkholder sustained critical head and neck injuries. He was transported to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased by medical personnel.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that motorcyclists face, particularly when encountering unexpected road conditions such as gravel.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim.

Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Buffalo

Buffalo, NY – Motorcycle Crash, One Dead on Zoar Valley RdZoar Valley Road, with its rural setting in Erie County, can present significant hazards, and this accident underscores the importance of cautious driving, especially in areas where road surfaces may be compromised. Fatal motorcycle accidents in the Town of Collins, like in many other rural and suburban areas, highlight the inherent risks motorcyclists face on the road. The combination of winding roads, varying terrain, and sometimes less-traveled paths can increase the likelihood of accidents. Factors such as loose gravel, sharp turns, and the unexpected presence of wildlife or other road hazards can catch motorists off guard, leading to catastrophic results. Additionally, the rural setting may result in longer response times for emergency services, further complicating the outcomes for those involved.

Motorcycle accidents in these areas also bring attention to issues related to driver awareness. Often, drivers of larger vehicles may not see or accurately judge the speed of a motorcycle, leading to accidents at intersections, during lane changes, or when vehicles are making turns. For families dealing with the aftermath of such a tragedy, navigating the legal landscape can be overwhelming.

Seeking a Buffalo motorcycle crash attorney is often necessary to ensure that the rights of the deceased are protected and that any responsible parties are held accountable.
