Huntington, NY - Officer Hurt in DUI Crash on Jericho Tpke

Huntington, NY (April 19, 2024) – An officer with the Suffolk County Police Department Second Precinct was injured after being hit by an alleged drunk driver in the Huntington area. The accident was reported at the 1070 block of E. Jericho Turnpike early that morning around 2:45 a.m. The officer was reportedly attending to the scene of another crash when they were hit by another driver.

According to local reports, 27-year-old Dimitrios Thomopoulos of Old Westbury was operating a 2023 Hyundai when he hit a pole. The driver was charged with driving under the influence but was not injured. As the driver’s vehicle was being towed, a 2016 Mini Cooper 56-year-old James Byrne of Huntington hit the back of the patrol car as it blocked traffic. The officer was in the car and was transported to a local hospital for treatment of sustained injuries. Byrne was also cited for driving while intoxicated and transferred to nearby hospital for treatment. No further information on the crash is currently available. An ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash is being managed by local law enforcement officials.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
