Speeding-Related Crashes in New York
There is always a far higher risk of causing a catastrophic car accident when you speed, and one major problem in New York City is speeding. Across the city in 2022, 3,940 motor vehicle accidents were the result of speeding drivers, and even though less than 10 percent of New York City’s roadways have speed limits higher than 25 mph, nearly 25 percent of all traffic fatalities involve speeding drivers. Surprisingly, roadways with higher speed limits accounted for nearly 24 percent of all traffic deaths that year. Speeding significantly lengthens the stopping distance and makes it much more difficult to control a vehicle.
